Our mate Kyneee from the Forums, has alerted me to the fact that there was an avalanche over the weekend at Blue Lake that claimed a life. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that a 22 year old man has died after trying to ski a cornice. There were apparently 2 other deaths in the Snowy Mountains over the weekend. All sadness aside, I think its epic that we have enough snow to even cause an avalanche. Apart from a Mt Buller legend that Tom Boulder was caught in an avalanche and survived, I have not heard of another case. Just remember people, be safe out there.

pretty strange that its the first avalanche death in australia since 1956. and that was from a hut getting hit in one.
i have heard of people getting stuck in the feathertop cornice though.

In the mid 80′s Tom Kean was the victim of avalanche on Mt Feathertop. There was an avalanche rescue on Gotcha at Mt Hotham in about 2000. I have been trapped in an avalanche and buried to the waist on Avalanche Gully near Australia Drift at Mt Hotham. The risk is more common than most Australian skiers and boarders realise.
Wow, it looks like the search party walked away relatively unscathed!!!
Come on guys, someone died have some respect
It’s sad for sure, at least people are talking, it never would have been a concern of mine in AUS. That is definitely a decent slide.
