Your chance to vote again on the Australian snowboard magazines! All three have hit the shelves now and everyone has got their favorites… Covers have gone to Ben Fawcett, Nick Gregory and Mitch Allan. As with last year, Pop is not on the list cause we’d be accused of bias if we won – so this is just the three pay per issue mags.
For your info, Transfer is $9.99 and is 146 pages – the editor is Russ Holt and the magazine is now in its second year. Aus/NZ Snowboarder is $10.50 and is 114 pages. It is edited by Ryan Wilmott and comes out of the same building as Slam skate mag amongst others. And finally Snowboarding is $7.95 and 148 pages. It is edited by Chris McAlpine who is in his second season as editor there.
You have the info and you’ve seen the mags – Now, Vote! Vote! Vote!
The best issue #1 Australian snowboarding magazine for 2010 is:
- Snowboarding (ACP) (39% of Votes)
- Transfer (Transfer Snowboard Magazine) (35% of Votes)
- Snowboarder (Morrison) (26% of Votes)

Purleease!! Snowboarding is the best mag. At least McAlpine is not like the other eds who sit at their computers and press “SEND” 100,000 times a day to register their own work!! Get real- those with the international “respect” from brands and riders don’t need to brag or make sure the mag wins a rigged comp. Aus NZ Snowboarding is the industry bible and the only one to refer to!!
So with you Snowdog let’s get real and support the best in the industry! Chriso you rock
Snowdog -
1. No one can sit on their computer and vote more than once – one IP, one vote. We wanted an accurate idea of how people in snowboarding view the magazines, so we designed it that way.
2. Winning this comp is bragging rights for the editor of that magazine – the public voted their magazine the best and therefore they should be proud of their effort.
3. How is the comp rigged and who benefits from it being rigged?
4. How is Aus/NZ Snowboarding ‘the bible’? What makes it standout from the others? I’m not saying it isn’t – but making the claim and backing it up are two different things… Tell us why it’s the best.
I am sorry if you’re disappointed in the results so far – my only suggestion would be to make sure your friends and other supporters of Snowboarding get in and vote too.

Thanks for the comment. Can you lean over to the desk next to you and let Snowdog know I’ve replied to their comment. Ta!
Have bought all three and to be honest two were good but one in particular disappointed. Snowboarding and Transfer delivered again. Snowboarding though kept me reading. It’s features seemed more varied and well more interesting. It’s board buyers guide has more detail as well for sure. Snowboarder I think needs to go back to the drawing board.
To me ‘Aus/NZ Snowboarding’ is a joke. Tell me, what is Australian Snowboarding actually doing for Australian snowboarding? I want a Transworld Snowboarding of Australia. Team challenges, unique stories, cool shit. The ‘Massive’ issue is a massive disappointment for me. I actually went through and counted how many photos of Australian’s are in that magazine. Almost 50% of the photos for the whole magazine are from 4 guys. Clint Allan, Mitch Allan, Robbie Walker and Gus St Leon. The remaining 6 Aussies all have one photo each. Oh and the editor gave himself one too. There are only 3 New Zealanders in it, Jacob Koia, Will Jackawyas and Roland Morley Brown. Every other photo is an international (I counted 15 guys with 20 photos). There’s 1 photo of a girl. Based on this, it should be International Snowboarding with a couple Aus/NZ guys thrown in. At least that way they wouldn’t have to support the scene. Oh that’s right, they don’t.
I like constructive comments.
Drake – Good assessment.
There is still a lack of quality writing throughout all the mags but I guess to have an industry view, we get people within the industry to write. I am just saying, in my opinion, that some of the stories lack a bit of focus and could do with a bit of tightening up to make it logical and have a point.
I do think they all have some good points and they also have some areas they need to work on. The biggest critisism is that they appear to support some brands more than others, particularly in their product reviews. It would also be nice to have someone actually provide an unbiased opinion and rate all the new gear.
Good to see some people supporting the industry though by buying the different Aus mags. A little disappointed about buying a Transfer subscription and having to wait almost two weeks after it hit shleves for my magazine to arrive in the mail.
Keep up the great work Rick and Dave!
who here has seen http://www.easyloungin.com ? it’s a tahoe based website linked to the shop porters tahoe. i really wish in oz we had a mag/website to rival this. i love popmag, i also enjoy transfer,a/nz snowboarding and australian snowboarder. but they all lack something the big o/s mags have, but in some ways also have their own unique flavour that they express. i really dont know where i am going with this but check out easylounge or even http://www.boardworld.com.au ….. different strokes for different folks
co-incidentally i would have voted for pop if you guys had put yourselves in…. your mag is rad, free (except for us subscribers) and sometimes we get goodies as a bonus!
ps dave or rick my popmag diecuts have peeled after last year here and this year o/s…any chance of new slick purple diecut again?
First off, soo glad the Aussie forums have people that are actually expressing their real views and that they aren’t anything like the seppo shit on TWS.. but to my point.
Having also been in the industry for over a fair while, I’m stoked everyone here gives a shit about snowboarding to write their piece because that passion is fuelling our industry ultimately, and I’m stoked Russ Holt is creating another space for A/NZ Snowboarding.
When it comes to the mags and who had the best issue so far, I bought all 3 as soon as I saw them and went cover to cover. I hope Chris, Russ, Rick/Dave and Ryan are tuning in though thats for sure.
When it comes down to it though, the mags are such a key part of representing snowboarding and the more they represent that in every way possible, the better – people, places, products and so on.
To me the more riders we can create a platform for, the better. We want to see all those guys and their stories, we want to see photos that make us want to ride and everything else a good mag entails.
Focus on the best of everything – people, places and products. Give rise to the new crew coming through and include womens snowboarding too! From the magazines, to the stores and what they stock, to wednesday night at Banjo’s, we’ve gotta focus on Women’s snowboarding; it’s all connected.
To me the real point here is that we’ve all got to invest in Australian Snowboarding for any of this to happen, whether that means being honest and critical of one mag and biblical of another, so fuckin be it, whatever man, check TWS and appreciate that it ain’t about being “First”, it’s about snowboarding and giving a shit is really something worthwhile.
Cheers to Pop Mag for the poll and bag jumps are the future !
can someone send me some mags?
nice work Pop – Funny and entertaining read. One of our writers alerted us about this poll and we had a good laugh about this with a few mates over some drinks last night including ACP editor – Chriso.
Overall I think everyone should relax a bit and go for a snowboard – its all just fun.
For the record TRANSFER #3 is 184 pages and is the only magazine owned by snowboarders. We actively put a lot of money into snowboarding through the magazine and initiatives like movies and etc – I challenge the other publishers to do the same instead of just taking from it.
Look out for Transfer #4 with the MADE YOU LOOK movie – All Australian/NZ snowboarding supported and funded by Transfer and core Australian snowboard companies. I hope this issue will arrive on time for you “Bend”… sorry we are working to get better on this.. send us a not on Facebook and we’ll send you some rad die Cut Transfer stickers. You’ll be stoked on the present we have for subscribers that will come with Issue #5- Hard cover photo book in August.
See yall on the slopes – hoping for some deep pow this year!

Here are some tips for further marketing ventures into that crazy, confusing world of the internet.
1. When trying to comment anonymously take the time to read the forum / shoutbox / comment list and pay attention to what people use as usernames. In the case of Pop its usually that persons first name like Mike, Greg, Ed, Marcus etc.. While marketing genius like Snowdog might work on ski.com.au forum you stand out on here trying to apply the same logic.
2. As mentioned in the shoutbox, IP addresses are commonly referred to as digital fingerprints when using the internet. Sounds confusing I know but the boys downstairs in the IT department should be able to help you out with that one. When you both comment from the same IP address almost simultaneously it actually doesnt look like two random people in agreeance at all. Type
3. The Australian snow industry is that small and tight knit that if your editor really has ‘international respect’ than chances are everyone already knows about it. Having to reiterate the fact really reeks of desperation.
4. Talking down your competition to further reiterate your point reeks even further still of desperation. Again if you have faith in the product your selling then you don’t need to remind people how good it is, they already know.
5. After making it publicly known that your horrified that your product is running a losing race on a public opinion poll, people will smell a rat when miraciously you’ve shot to the lead on said opinion poll two days later. Maybe try emailing 10 people at a time to vote every day rather than 100 people at once. Much less conspicuous that way.
Oh snap!
@timmya
not sure if that seppo comment was directed at me? tws is not a forum but a public garbage tip. easyloungin is not just made up of americans but has a membership that is worldwide, yes there are a lot of old BMB memebers there but also a lot of new blood. what i wish was that australia had a similar online presence. porters really gets behind the site with giveaways, video reviews on gear etc and the whole vibe is fun all the time, not too many bannings of members (unless it’s for racist reasons)
I love print mags but in this day and age the web really offers more than a printed page so i dont know how much longer mags will be viable, i mean pop is free!
when i was a kid (pre-interweb) i loved nothing more than saving up change and buying surf mags like ASL or the newspaper sized Tracks and reading them till they were worn out then started cutting up the mags to cover my school books and put the pull outs on my wall.
now it’s all screensavers and wallpapers, but the articles are still there. problem is giving your mate a job at your mag cause he shreds and can do 12′s doesn’t mean he can write like a journo. i think if aussie boarders want to put mags together they need to invest a bit of time into learning the skills behind the job they are going to do. a lot of what we read is good stuff, but not much different from any online blogger could come with.
Loving these comments. As has been said, is great to see some thought go into them rather than the usual forum dribble. Especially to those tearing snowboarding a new arsehole – pretty poor effort bignoting yourself in such a way!
Tranfer, nice job, hanging to see if you can continue the high stadard you set last year. Yes Russ, it is all about fun and thats what we want to feel through the mags. I reckon the best at achieving this is monster children, but i’m guessing this mag takes twice as much effort and sells half the copies, so go figure. Anywho, Transfer, you get my vote. At least you would if I wasnt a spaz and hit the wrong button. Rookie. Error.
Very insightful stuff guys, it’s cool that you all contribute to the site like this. Thanks.
Well put Russ. Personally I enjoy reading Transfer and Snowboarding. I agree with Greg that Transfer set a new standard last year which is great for the industry. It pushes all the mags to strive for better coverage and content which in turn serves the industry and the riders more fairly and better. I like the fact that Chris is trying to put Australian riders against internationals but to be honest I would like seeing more aussie riders involved and more industry related content…
Overall though I just enjoy reading about snowboarding and particularly about australian snowboarders and australian snowboarding. Keep up the good work
Cheers
Hey Big Nose Chriso!
You are the best! rock on
Animal
Eds – How about a regular column/article on ‘common folk’ out there just doin it for the love of it. As much fun as it is listening to interviews with the same 5-10 guys over and over, there must be some pretty cool stories out there from all of the oz/nz crew that rides back to back for years all over the world. Maybe those working their tail off to keep the local industry ticking. Variety is the spice of life eh?
