Slater’s Greatest Oop

It’s unlikely that Kelly Slater throwing down the biggest alley oop ever would get swept under the carpet, but with the next World Tour event starting in Rio I wanted to make sure this gets up before we’re swamped with comp news. Cos this is pretty messed up.

What’s messed up? This is messed up.

The folks at Stab mag gave us the heads up on this clip, and in their post they compare it to Jordy Smith’s previous biggest-oop-ever. Looking at the comparison, it’s no comparison.

This is kind of a cool clip all round for Slater’s backhand hooks, but … damn. The first time I watched this I just rewound that air at 0.23 over and over. How’s the distance he covers? How’s the rubber-kneed recovery? How’s the height? This is some borderline Danny Way shit right here.

I also love that the filmer doesn’t seem to register how incredible the move is – there’s no slo-mo, no replay, it just comes without fanfare in a little clip which probably contains all of Kelly’s waves from that surf.

After he saw Modern Collective, Kelly apparently expressed a desire to get to the Reunion Island rip-bowl right that Jordy went crackers on. You know, so he could learn how to do airs as good as Jordy.

II don’t know if Kelly really thought he needed to work on his air game or not, but watching this, it would seem he’s still – still! – got everyone else covered.
