Albee Layer: Next Level Superstar

A relatively straightforward air from the mindblowing assortment on display in the clip linked to below.

The first round of Innersection Mk.II has been run and won, and from the early entries, it’s clear we have a new star.

For those who came in late, Innersection is the Taylor Steele production where surfers and filmers load clips onto innersection.tv, the public votes, and the winners of each round get a stack o’ cash and a part in the end-of-year DVD. Oh, and the overall winner gets $100,000.

Anyway, the winner of the first round of 2011 is a mate of last year’s overall winner Matt Meola. Both are from the Hawaiian island of Maui, and once you see Albee’s clip, it’s a no brainer. Like, you don’t even have to watch his competition because what could top this? Simply put, This. Kid. Is. Messed. Up.

Innersection have taken the clip out of public view, but the good folks at Contrast magazine have figured away to keep it live, so check it here.

The first barrel is simply monstrous, but the clip moves into so many howdhedoodat?-type airs (seriously. So many) that you kind of forget he’s got big wave game until Oh look, there he is PADDLING 20 FOOT JAWS.

Paddling. Not towing.

The word ‘freak’ gets bandied about a lot, but this guy with the ripper name has got the goods. And amazingly, he’s become this good at surfing without a sponsor paying for trips all over the world. Kind of amazing when you think of all the groms who’ve been sponsored since they were 8 and don’t have half the chops or originality. Anyway, cynicism aside, watch Albee’s clip. The future is here.
